Folly

I learned perhaps the MOST important thing in my college career (well, the first one) the second semester of college in Econ 101.  I learned NEVER to take a class at 7:00 am.  I don’t think I recall any single bit of that class.  I probably don’t because I was asleep…at home…in my bed…for another 3 hours.  It was bad.  The professor did make me a deal though.  Turn in all my homework, and he’d give me a C.  I did.  He didn’t.  Years later, when I actually looked at my transcripts, I contacted him and he made it all better.  Swell guy, ol’ professor…er…um…Smith?  This isn’t the last we’ll see of Econ either….

Paying for college is a sore subject for me. I was a student who needed financial aid. My parents hadn’t a clue, so I had no clue. Initially, I was on a scholarship from NASA, as a Chemical Engineering major. But one class in ChemE made me a Spanish major. For the remainder of my 10 years in college, I only ever got a pittance of Pell Grants and a boat load of loans. I will be paying for college FOREVER. Meanwhile, “student” athletes got full rides, fortune, and glory, not to mention adoration. Rarely have I seen a group of people who less deserved what they got. Not a brain in their head. I have no problem with athletics…as long as it has NO attachment to academics. If you want to play a game, play a game. You don’t deserve free school for playing a game. I got straight A’s in high school. I speak several languages. I have a genius level IQ. And no love for me?! I went to the same school as Christopher Farnsworth, Curtis Stigers, and Jake Plummer. All I’ve ever been asked about is the quarterback. F athletes. Maaaaybe I’m a little bitter.

Anyway, I always enjoyed getting my gob’ment check and blowing through the “extra” hundred dollars the beginning of each year. But being broke the rest of the year, begging for the left over crust from my roomate’s pizza, kinda sucked. My best friend didn’t have these problems. He got bankrolled by his folks. Granted, he had to deal with them, and I didn’t. I think I may have made out better.

I had a really cool Work Study job working in the Admissions Department at U of I. Mostly, I filed applications, so I got really good at singing the alphabet song. But whenever I had a Chinese file, it was a little tricky. My own ignorance of whether the student’s first name was “Xiang” or his last name was “Zhuang” or the other way around made it difficult. Plus, they use really super fine parchment paper, so if you look at it wrong, it tears. But my favorite duty was to shred stuff. Much joy and mirth was derived from shredding.

University Of Idaho

I applied to exactly one college in high school, Rice University in Houston, Texas. I never wanted to go anywhere else. I toured the college, interviewed with some alumnus, wrote an essay about my Grandfather (a Houstonian who had a day named after him!). I didn’t get accepted. At that point, it was summer and I had to scramble. I called University of Idaho and got in there (I sure wasn’t going to go to Bozo State!). I had been there for a few weeks in previous summer with the JET program (some sort of Engineering camp). I had hated it and went home early.

Eventually, U of I grew on me and became a home.

Snapple

I don’t remember exactly what I drank in my lunches at work, but whatever it was, it was fan-freaking-tastic! I loved it so much that my coworkers said I would make a good commercial. And I loved the “Snapple Lady.”
