Sympathy For The Devil

This comic took a while to produce. It introduces the character Diabla into my life. I struggled with how to handle this particular chapter for a long time. Initially, I thought about drawing Diabla at one size and then progressively enlarging her (Art Imitates Life). I toyed with the idea of making her human and slowly adding devil features. Then, I decided to retcon her out of my life’s story. That leads us to her current incarnation as a puff of demonic smoke. The other character is actually the guy who introduced me to Diabla. For many comics, I have created a friend character and used him for most of my college interactions both to provide some continuity and because it was less work. This one needed more verisimilitude. This comic is exactly how it went down. Ulrich and I were headed to physics lab at 2:30 and ditched to go party.

Hairiest Woman

I was walking by this happening room around campus and saw this contest going on. There were a bunch of dudes dressed in drag. I rolled up my sleeves, pulled down my shirt and promptly won the contest…despite not being dressed as a woman. Imagine what Robin Williams looks like naked. That’s me. Also, Chewbacca.

What did I win? Free tickets to the movies. I think I took my friend, the aerobics instructor.

Black Ball

My friend was really keen on having our characters die in horrible deaths. So, he got himself a copy of Grim Tooth Traps and set us loose on them. My solution was to transform into a Black Ball, a floating spherical entity that disintegrates everything it touches. That little feature made pretty much all the traps a moot point. That is, until I got to this door. Breaching the door ignited the phosphorous coated walls and created a very pretty pyrotechnic display.

Also, locks keep out honest people.

Helga the Maid

Part of what made playing D&D with my friend so fun was his approach to DMing. He would conjure up unsolvable scenarios, where absolute death was certain, and then drop us in the meat grinder. And every time, we rose to the occasion and found a way out. One of his common tactics was having the NPCs (NOT the villain, mind you, just some random person) be utter bad asses. Helga the Maid was one such character. We were in some inn, doing something sneaky and the maid came in. We figured we would incapacitate her and go about our business. Turns out Helga was a 5th degree black belt and she proceeded to whoop our asses. See that mosquito? You might think it’s a mosquito. It might look like a mosquito and be behaving like a mosquito, but that is a master tactician. Every fight was to the death. It got to the point where we just expected it. Very challenging and very fun! Another trivia note: my gremlin possessed plasticity; I could change shape. It probably endangered me more than it helped.

Wow! Al Habib

A few things to say about this comic. We played a really cool Arabian themed adventure for a while. One of my all-time favorite characters was a Gremlin. One of the NPCs was named WOW Al Habib. Every single time the DM said it, one of the players would jump out of his skin. Naturally, we said it as much as we could after that. Dachna did something with baskets. Snell? Sell? Scale? Smell? Dachna later came to symbolize “ugly” in our vernacular. So much joy and laughter was had while playing this game over the years. If we had recorded these sessions, it would have been amazing. But, alas, it lives on only in the memories of a few.
