Eddie Method

My (first) college roommate was preternaturally gifted at Street Fighter. His go-to avatar was Ryu/Ken (same guy really). And no matter what else happened, at the end, Eddie was victorious. He was equally as happy shooting fireballs, BYU-KENs, or just kicking the crap out of the other player. Whenever any of us would ask him to show us how to do it, he would gladly demonstrate it…by applying it. We called it the “Eddie Method.” The school that takes its fledgling students and “teaches” them greatness by being great.

My own strategy was to play Cheater Blanka and shock the crap out of him, eat his brain, then shock the crap out of him. I died by fireballs a lot.

Mind Powers

I had a fan and it just wouldn’t turn on, so I aimed my clawed hand at it, focused my chi and the fan whirred to life. I suppose the specific power at play here was Telekinesis. I think I have applied that power on two occasions successfully. The second time had nothing to do with air conditioning devices.

Pizza Ninja

I had a meal plan in the dorms and every once in a while, I would go downstairs and get a snack. One day, I had a drink and a slice of pizza on a plate. Being the ever so graceful, I tripped walking up the stairs and my pizza slipped off the plate towards the floor. I somehow (mystical ninja powers) caught the pizza before it hit the floor on the plate AND didn’t spill a drop of my drink. Truly amazing. This tale of dazzling dexterity does not offset the three occasions where I tripped on absolutely nothing while walking, nor the time I spontaneously fell down in ToysRUs. While this comic might not be worthy, I really have to celebrate where I can.

Gene Simmons

My friend and I had a momentary falling out in college. The story is that I didn’t feel like having a bunch of people in my room playing Street Fighter, but they wouldn’t leave. So, I waited until the end boss and unplugged it. My friend was about the beat the game as Dhalsim. Yeah, pretty low, I know. I know. For a few weeks, we weren’t friends. While he was ignoring me, he decided to take a pair of safety scissors and performed a sublingual frenectomy on himself. That’s right, he cut the membranes under his own tongue out. Snip. Snip. Before that procedure, he couldn’t stick his tongue out very far. Now, he can. I put that on the list of “Things wrong with him.”

I love the hand work in panels 3 and 4.

Double Major

After spending the summer playing the piano, I really wanted to keep the momentum going and take lessons in college. I did go to a school that has a serious music program! But, piano class was only available to music majors, a loophole I cleverly circumvented by…declaring a major in Music Performance: Piano. Sadly, the momentum was very quickly crushed. I didn’t have a piano handy and finding one took a lot of effort and time that I didn’t want to commit. Also, they kind of expected us to be experts at reading sheet music. I ended up dropping the class, but never bothered to un-declare the major. To this day, my transcripts list me as a double major in Spanish and Music. Amazing.

As an interesting note, the Registrar in panel 2 apparently looks a lot like my wife. The kids thought it was her. But, it isn’t. She’s just an extra.
